Market Research Career

Starting a career in market research will involve an eye for analysis.  Essentially, market research is the activity of gathering and analysing information about the general public opinion regarding almost anything.  The main focus of market research is to apply the findings to advertising principles, making advertising more appealing the general public opinion.  There are several ways to start a market research career, since there are many different positions in the industry.  Here are the essential functions of the market researcher.

You are essentially discovering what people want, like, dislike, hate, and need.  This can include products that already exist and those that companies are debating creating.  If the market research data suggests that people would like a new type of cereal that uses different types of fruit, then the company collecting or analyzing the data would then take the fruit they have determined people want in their cereal and put it there.  While the market research data says this product will be a hit, it does not always guarantee the perfect results. The majority of market research careers can be found at firms who specifically deal with one certain industry.  Nielsen's, the company that provide television ratings, work specifically with the broadcast industry, including television and radio.  The information they gather allows advertisers and television stations the opportunity to place ads more targeted for a certain audience on when that audience is watching a certain program. 

The market research field has many different levels, from those who use the data collected following someone else's interpretation to those who actually collect the data. Here are a number of the market research careers that can be found in the industry.

• Marketing Directors - In this role, people take the interpretations of the data collected about their target markets and put it to good use, applying the changes needed for the data to be worthwhile.
• Analyst - The analyst makes practical judgements based on the data collected, then makes recommendations to the marketing director.  The interpretation of the data collected is one of the most important roles in the market research process.  
• Research Directors - These are the ones who create the testing material, such as questionnaires, and the methods of getting information from individuals about their specific thoughts are certain things.
• General Market Researcher - These are the ones who go out and collect the data through the administration of surveys, questionnaires, and other information gathering techniques. 

There are literally hundreds of positions in the market research field, with each one providing the opportunity to show you just what people really want.

Applications of Market Research

There are a number of different uses for market research, but two main fields that people tend to move into, and those are advertising or development.  While getting the information is the most important role in market research, the use of the data depends specifically on the company your market research career is at.  For most, they will be determining market research information to be used in the advertising world.  This can help to dictate just how advertising is targeted towards market, how the advertising is designed, and when people will see this specific advertising in order to sell your company's products. 

The other main use of market research is in the development of new products.  Products and services that have already been developed can be used to create new ideas for products and services.  These new ideas can then be sent to the company itself, allowing for the the way to be paved for newer products and services to hit the market.
